What is cradle board?

A cradle board is a traditional Native American baby carrier that has been used for centuries by various indigenous cultures throughout North America.

Typically made of wood or other sturdy materials, a cradle board is designed to securely hold a baby in a reclined position while allowing the caregiver to carry the baby on their back or waist. The baby is strapped onto the board with fabric or leather restraints, and the board usually has a firm back support to protect the baby's spine.

Cradle boards are often decorated with intricate designs, beadwork, or symbols that hold cultural significance. They are also used as a sleeping surface for the baby, as they can be placed on the ground or on a raised surface.

In many Native American cultures, cradle boards are considered a sacred and important cultural artifact, and they are often passed down through generations as a symbol of family heritage and tradition. Today, cradle boards are still used by some indigenous communities and can also be found in museums and private collections as examples of traditional craftsmanship and cultural practices.
